Rabbit Breeders

Rabbits are adorable, furry creatures that can be loveable as pets, but should always be obtained directly through rabbit breeders for the most satisfactory results.

An organization called ARBA (American Rabbit Breeders Association) exists specifically for the rabbit lover.  Their membership roster consists of individual rabbit pet owners, breeders as well as commercial rabbit farmers, with benefits for each slightly different depending on their interest.  The organization is a plethora of information for anyone who wants to have a pet rabbit or to start breeding rabbits for commercial purposes.  It also lists events that rabbit lovers may be interested in, such as shows and clubs for young and old alike.  Breeders of numerous different rabbit breeds are listed for anyone looking for a particular type.

Rabbit breeders may raise one breed or several different breeds of rabbits.  Locating a breeder can be done easily using the ARBA, or by browsing the Internet.   There may be local breeders in your area that can be found through the yellow pages or other advertisements.

Individuals who wish to obtain a rabbit as a pet should start their search with rabbit breeders.  For those who have never cared for a rabbit before, there is much to learn.  There are many varieties of rabbits, and not all may make the best of pets.  Each comes with its own personality and temperament, just like a dog or cat.   Rabbit breeders have the knowledge that can help to pair an individual with the right breed of rabbit for their specific family and lifestyle.

The greatest benefit of choosing your new pet from rabbit breeders is in knowing that your pet will be healthy and of solid stock, if of a certified breed.  Rabbits can reproduce on their own quite easily, but not always in the safest or healthiest of methods.  Related rabbits should not be allowed to breed for the best litters.  Rabbit breeders carefully choose mating couples within their stock to maintain blood lines, and supervise the breeding of the pair.

While most rabbit breeders are reputable, be sure to do your homework.  Ask the breeder for specific costs and refund policies beforehand so that you are fully informed.  Find out how old the rabbits are; baby rabbits, or kittens, should not be offered for sale prior to the age of 8 weeks.  You will want to see the rabbits for sale before the purchase; some rabbit breeders will invite customers to their rabbitry, while others may wish to conduct business at a rabbit show or a local fair.  When you decide to purchase one of the rabbits, the breeder will demonstrate the health of your new pet; clear eyes, nose and good teeth.  Ask for proof of the rabbit’s age, and view the littermates and parents.

Rabbit breeders are the best place to start for anyone looking for a rabbit as a pet.  By doing so, you will know that your pet will be healthy, and that you will receive the information you need to make sure you know how to care for the rabbit.  This will ensure that you and your pet will truly enjoy your new life together.
