House Rabbits – A Quick Guide for Success

Rabbits are lovely pets, and because of their great dispositions and easily trainable nature, can be great house rabbits.  Keeping your pet rabbit inside the home can be successful with just a little guidance.

Being able to keep your pet rabbit in the house can have great benefits for both you and your rabbit.  There is nothing more satisfying and relaxing than cuddling up to your pet at the end of a long work day.  The added advantage of cuddling up in your own recliner in the comfort of your living room instead of outside in a pen is even better.  House rabbits can become a real part of your family in this manner.  The rabbit will enjoy the close contact with its humans, as they are very sociable little creatures.  You may find your rabbit greeting you at the door when you come in from work!

One concern among owners in regard to house rabbits is in their potty habits.  Most people think that rabbits just eliminate wherever and whenever they feel the urge.  This could not be further from the truth.  Rabbits are very fussy about being clean, and will actually choose an area to eliminate; an area that it will then return to time and time again for that purpose.  So with some care early on with your house rabbit, you will be able to litter box train your pet with great success.  The rabbit will be free to roam the house, and you will have just one area to clean.

Another concern is in the health of house rabbits.  What about fleas?  It is true that house rabbits, like cats or dogs, can become infested with fleas.  Just like a cat or dog, however, the rabbit can be successfully treated.  First signs of flea habitation will be the incessant scratching of your rabbit.  Check the fur carefully; if fleas are present, you should see signs of brown flea droppings in the fur.  You may actually see the pests around the facial area of the house rabbit.

Depending on the degree of infestation, you may just be able to remove the fleas using a flea comb, available at any pet store.  If the infestation is widespread, a commercial product may be necessary.  Ask your veterinarian for recommendations of products that will be safe for rabbit use, and then use strictly as instructed.  Obviously, prevention is the best method of treatment; there are room treatments to prevent fleas that can be safely used.

All in all, house rabbits are vastly successful.  Keeping your pet rabbit indoors will provide great benefits to both of you, and should result in many years of enjoyable companionship.
